Closing the loop on AI drawing review
Today, ClearHandoff’s AI review flags issues on your drawings — missing dimensions, DFM problems, tolerance inconsistencies — and suggests fixes as text comments. If you agree with a suggestion, you still need to make the change in the drawing in our editor or in your CAD software yourself.
We’re building towards letting the AI make the fix directly. The same way coding agents already work in software development: the AI doesn’t just point out the bug, it writes the patch. For drawings this means that it will build upon your uploaded version: The AI will add, delete, and modify lines, symbols, and text as a suggestion that you can accept or decline.
Text to drawing is the foundation for that. If the AI can generate a drawing from a description, it can also modify an existing drawing based on its own review feedback.
Current limitations
It’s not perfect yet. We use a straightforward approach with no correctness-testing loops, and our drawing editor is intentionally focused on the basics — lines, dimensions, title blocks, the essentials. That means the AI sometimes makes silly mistakes when drawing, and it cannot draw certain things like GD&T datums because our editor does not have this capability yet.
It works well for simple sheet metal parts: brackets, flanges, flat profiles. Less so for complex geometry like multi-step shafts or assemblies.
